The Sunshine Coast’s next generation of computer science whiz kids have been given a major boost thanks to a long-term partnership with a local company. Fleet management and telematics solution provider The Fleet Office has committed to a partnership with the University of the Sunshine Coast to fund a scholarship for its emerging computer science students. The $5,000 annual scholarship is open to high achieving second year USC students currently enrolled in computer-based programs.
The Fleet Office founder and director Jim Lee said his team felt privileged and extremely proud to be providing a scholarship for USC students. “We provide support to several local charities and we know that all sectors of the community are feeling the pinch at the moment and university students are no different,” Mr Fleet said. “We hope this scholarship can help offset some study-related costs so the successful recipient has the freedom to focus on their education and future career development opportunities. “Over the years we have employed a number of USC students and we have found it difficult to maintain the pipeline of talent coming into the business so we are always on the lookout for bright and engaging students as we continue our growth trajectory. “We will also be looking to provide work experience and internship opportunities to the successful scholarship student for the duration of their academic career to ensure they are well positioned to join the workforce upon graduation.”
Mr Lee spent 14 years in the British Army in various roles including being trained as a heavy diesel fitter and later an officer, managing a construction squadron in Afghanistan. In 2010 he moved to Australia to manage the largest privately owned vehicle and equipment fleet in Queensland before starting The Fleet Office with his wife Angela in 2015. “When I completed high school there was absolutely no opportunity for me or any member of my family to go to university, I was fortunate to get a degree later in life thanks to a British Army sponsorship,” he said. “It wasn’t an easy path to take but I was motivated to learn and grow. “It’s my hope that this scholarship will pave the way for the next generation of innovators to come through and help change the way we work and live.”
